Does WhatsApp Web have autocorrect?
No. WhatsApp Web has no built-in autocorrect. At most, your browser's spell check underlines a misspelled word, and you have to fix it yourself. To get automatic corrections as you type, like on your phone, you need a browser extension.
Why your phone autocorrects but WhatsApp Web doesn't
The autocorrect you're used to on your phone doesn't come from WhatsApp. It comes from your phone's keyboard, which fixes typos, adds apostrophes, and capitalizes sentences in every app. WhatsApp itself never corrects anything.
On a computer, there's no keyboard app doing that work. WhatsApp Web sends exactly what you type, typos included. That's why so many people who switch to WhatsApp on their computer suddenly notice mistakes in their messages that their phone used to catch.
What you get by default: spell check underlines
Most browsers have a built-in spell checker. In Chrome, it can underline misspelled words in red, and you can right-click a word to pick the correct spelling. To make sure it's on:
- Open Chrome's Settings.
- Go to Languages.
- Turn on Spell check, and choose Basic spell check.
Chrome also offers Enhanced spell check, which catches more mistakes but sends the text you type to Google to check it. For private conversations, the basic option keeps everything on your computer.
Spell check helps, but it isn't autocorrect. It only points at mistakes, so every fix is a right-click, and it does nothing about missing apostrophes, lowercase sentence starts, or a lone "i". When you're replying quickly, underlined words go out anyway.
How to get real autocorrect on WhatsApp Web
For automatic fixes as you type, you need a browser extension built for WhatsApp Web. ChatPolish is one: it brings iPhone-style autocorrect to WhatsApp Web in Chrome.
What it fixes as you type
- Typos and missing apostrophes, corrected the moment you finish a word, using a 160,000-word dictionary. It only fixes a word when there's one clear match, so it doesn't guess on your behalf.
- Capitalization and spacing: sentence starts, a lone "i", missing spaces after commas, and a double space turning into a period, the way your phone does it.
- Things worth a second look, like repeated words or accidental ALL CAPS, flagged in a small banner instead of changed.
If you want more than typo fixes before an important message, press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) instead of Enter to get an optional AI review of grammar, tone, and clarity, using your own Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini account.
Setting it up
- Add ChatPolish from the Chrome Web Store.
- Refresh your WhatsApp Web tab once, so the extension can load.
- Start typing. Corrections happen automatically, and pressing Backspace right after a correction undoes it.
Is it private?
Regular autocorrect runs entirely in your browser, and your messages are never sent anywhere to be corrected. The AI review only runs when you press the shortcut, and it goes directly from your browser to the AI provider you choose. You can read the details in the privacy policy.
Who needs it most
Anyone who's cringed at a typo right after hitting send. But it matters most if you use WhatsApp for work: quotes, appointment confirmations, patient or client follow-ups. When WhatsApp is how your customers hear from you, every message is part of how your business comes across.
