Set up AI review, step by step
About five minutes, no technical knowledge needed. You only do this once.
This part is optional. Autocorrect works without any of this. The AI review is an extra: press Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac) instead of Enter, and an AI checks your message for grammar, tone and clarity before it goes out.
What is an "API key"?
Think of it as a password that lets ChatPolish ask an AI to check a message for you. You get one for free from the AI company's website, then paste it into ChatPolish's Settings once.
Your key stays in your own Chrome browser. When you ask for a review, your message goes straight from your computer to the AI company you picked. It never passes through ChatPolish.
Step 1: Pick one AI
You only need one. If you're not sure, pick Gemini.
Gemini, by Google Recommended: free
Free to use, no credit card. All you need is a Google account (the same one you use for Gmail or YouTube). Jump to the Gemini steps
ChatGPT, by OpenAI
Pay as you go: you add a small amount of credit (usually starting at $5), which lasts for thousands of checks. Jump to the ChatGPT steps
Claude, by Anthropic
Pay as you go, the same way: a small amount of credit up front (usually starting at $5). Jump to the Claude steps
One privacy difference worth knowing: on Google's free plan, Google may use the text you send to improve its products. If you'd rather that didn't happen with your messages, choose ChatGPT or Claude, which don't use paid API messages that way.
A ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription is a different thing and doesn't include a key. Keys are set up separately, as shown below.
Step 2 with Gemini (free)
- Go to aistudio.google.com/apikey and sign in with your Google account.
- If Google asks you to accept its terms, read them and continue.
- Click the Create API key button. If it asks which project to use, pick the one already shown (or "Create API key in new project"). Either is fine.
- Your key appears: a long code that starts with
AIza. Click the copy button next to it. - Now go to Step 3 and paste it into ChatPolish.
Step 2 with ChatGPT
- Go to platform.openai.com/api-keys and sign in. Your ChatGPT login works here too.
- Add a little credit: open Billing in Settings, choose to add credit, and enter a small amount (the minimum is usually $5).
- Back on the API keys page, click Create new secret key. Give it any name, like "ChatPolish", and create it.
- Copy the key. It starts with
sk-. OpenAI only shows it once, so copy it now. - Go to Step 3 and paste it into ChatPolish.
Step 2 with Claude
- Go to platform.claude.com and sign in or create an account.
- Add a little credit: open Billing and click Buy credits (the minimum is usually $5).
- Open API keys and click Create key. Give it any name, like "ChatPolish".
- Copy the key. It starts with
sk-ant-, and it's only shown once. - Go to Step 3 and paste it into ChatPolish.
Step 3: Paste it into ChatPolish
- Click the ChatPolish icon in Chrome's toolbar (if you don't see it, click the puzzle-piece icon first), then click Settings.
- Scroll to AI review and choose the AI you picked.
- Paste your key into the box and click Save.
- Click Test my key. A green check means you're done.
To use it, write a message in WhatsApp Web and press Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on a Mac) instead of Enter. You'll see suggested fixes before anything is sent.
What does it cost?
Gemini: free, within Google's daily limits, which are far more than one person's messages.
ChatGPT or Claude: roughly a tenth of a cent per check. A $5 credit typically lasts thousands of reviews. You only pay for the reviews you actually ask for; regular autocorrect never uses the AI.
If something goes wrong
"That key wasn't accepted"
Make sure you copied the whole key, with no space before or after it. If in doubt, create a new key and paste that one instead.
"No credit" or "quota" message
For ChatGPT or Claude, the account needs a little credit before the key works. Add credit in that company's Billing page, then try again.
"Too many requests"
Gemini's free plan limits how many checks you can run per minute. Wait a minute and try again.
